Gateway to Istria

Umag, located in the northwestern corner of Istria, is often described as the “gateway to Istria” for sailors. Its location, just a few nautical miles from the Italian border and close to Slovenia, makes it one of the most strategic entry points for yacht charters in Croatia. Many international yachts enter Croatian waters through Umag’s customs port, which also serves as an official port of entry.

The main nautical facility is ACI Marina Umag, a modern marina with over 450 berths, full technical services, and year-round operations. The marina is well protected from northern winds and has customs and border control facilities, making it particularly important for international yacht charters arriving from Italy (Trieste, Venice) or Slovenia (Portorož, Koper).

Umag is more of a transit base than a large charter hub, but it plays a key role in itineraries that start from the north and head south along the Istrian coast. Charter companies here focus on sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts, and Umag is especially attractive for one-way charters ending in Pula or further south in Dalmatia.

• By air: The nearest airport is Trieste Airport (Italy), just 50 km away. Pula Airport is around 85 km, and Ljubljana Airport 140 km.
• By car: Umag is directly connected to the Istrian Y motorway (Istrian Epsilon), making it easily reachable from Italy, Slovenia, Austria, and Germany.
• By sea: Many yachts arrive directly from Italy (Venice ~50 NM, Trieste ~25 NM).

Umag lies at the very northern tip of Croatia’s Adriatic coast, at approx. 45°26’N 13°31’E. Its location is ideal for cross-Adriatic sailing and short distances to popular towns like Novigrad and Poreč.

While small, Umag has a lively old town with Venetian houses, cobbled alleys, and a Mediterranean vibe. It is also famous as the host of the ATP Croatia Open tennis tournament, attracting international visitors each July. For sailors, Umag is less about culture and more about practicality – a reliable and safe nautical entry point into Croatia.
